Why is my refraction only a rough estimate of my anticipated postoperative astigmatism after cataract surgery?
Your natural lens has some astigmatism. Your natural lens contributes to the astigmatism in your glasses. The astigmatism in your natural lens disappears after cataract surgery. The natural lens astigmatism can be small or large, and the axis of your lens astigmatism may be different than the axis of your corneal astigmatism. Therefore the natural lens may increase or decrease the amount of astigmatism in your glasses prescription.
